The temple complex is a compilation of five temples, including a Buddhist temple. The central temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the most prestigious amongst the Hindus, with the remaining temples being dedicated to the Gods Ganesha, Ayyanayake and Kali.

In the 2nd century B.C., the Buddhist scriptures (the Tripitaka) were first committed to writing in “Ola leaves”, a chore that required the devout attention of about 500 senior monks 2,000 years ago. The rock caves were formed long ago by boulders tumbling down a nearby mountain. They contain various icons and frescoes.

Two blocks are currently opened to the public. Situated in Sri Lanka’s south-east hugging the panoramic Indian Ocean, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and was designated a national park in 1938. Ironically, the park was initially used as a hunting ground for the elite under British rule.

Among its more famous residents are the world’s biggest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks and crocodiles. A living heritage site, this 90 hectare (222 acre) attraction is a superb blend of architecture, with fortifications that resemble those in the coastal areas of Portugal. The fall of Galle to the Dutch in 1640 saw its fortifications consolidated further along the lines of the fortified cities of Europe. The Dutch and the English colonial styles are evident in the deep verandas of houses supported by timber or masonry pillars. Originally established by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it reached its zenith under Dutch rule in the 18th century, providing spacious housing, wide roads and all necessary facilities within its walls including an intricate sewage system that was ahead of its time. When it comes to fortified towns, nothing can compete with the Dutch Fort in Galle. This World Heritage Site on the south coast was the main port of call for ships sailing between the East and Europe.
