The Sinharaja forest reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot, the forest reserve gained international significance after having been designated a biosphere reserve and world heritage site by the UNESCO. This forest reserve stretches about twenty two kilometers from East to the West and Seven kilometers from North to South. Sinhalaja Forest reserve is abundant in endemic species that include reptiles, mammals, and birds.

Sri Lanka has one of the highest rates of biological endemism in the world whether in plants or animals and is included among the top five biodiversity hotspots in the World. You can find ninety one species of mammals in Sri Lanka. Asian elephants sloth bear leopards, sambar and wild buffaloes are the majority of the attention of wildlife lovers. Sea around the Island is home to large cetaceans including the mighty blue whales, sperm whales and lovely dolphines. Altogether 26 species of cetaceans rule the waters surrounding the country making it the best locations for whale and dolphin watching. Sri Lanka birds are the glory and has many endemic species.

Sri Lanka has one of the richest diversity of amphibians in the world containing over hundreds species of amphibians. Sri Lanka has highest amphibian species density in the world.

Kanneliya rain forest which is in extent 10,140 hectares is located in Southern Province of Sri Lanka was designated as a significant biosphere reserve in 2004 by the UNESO This forest is a richest area in terms of flora in the whole of South Asia the forest reserve is located about 35 kilometers Northwest of the City of Galle.

Among tourists who are coming to Sri Lanka an another favourite attraction is elephant watching. The best place to watch elephants in semi wild life is the Pinnawela elephant orphanage. You can view elephants there very closely and you can engage in feeding baby elephants too.
